Activity One

Initiate a group discussion on farming and how we get products we use.  Some questions to get the ball rolling:  Where do hamburgers come from?  Where do fast food restaurants get the items to make hamburgers?  Where does the meat come from, the lettuce, the pickle?  What about the French fries that come with your burger?  What about the fish sandwich, where does the fish come from?  Can we get fish from farms?  Did you know that some alligators are also raised on farms?

Lead the students in a discussion that includes products they may not normally think about including belts and wallets (most alligator leather products are from farmed alligators), fish in pet shops (Florida raises nearly all the tropical fish grown in the U.S.) and plants for homes and gardens (Florida is a leading producer of aquarium and water garden plants).
